Relaxing morning on the boat, cruising the river and docking in Hannibal about noon. Our excursion this afternoon would cover very short distances in the town, so we started out walking. While Sam went checking out the shops, I climbed the 244 steps to the non-funtional Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse (totally pain free I am happy to add!) Weather is spectacular!
Our first stop along Main St was the Mark Twain museum which had an exhibit of authentic Norman Rockwell drawings and paintings used for MT magazine covers. Most of them depicted scenes from Twain's famous books. Next, we went to Mark Twain's Boyhood Home and Museum complex. Very well done! A chronological look at Twain's life. I bought a b ook in the gift shop: "A Connecticut Yankee in King Aurthur's Court".
Only several blocks away, we visited the restored victorian mansion known as the Laura Hawkins house, the inspiration for the Becky Thatcher character. The owner of the house, just this year, had opened a "tea garden" in the backyard and served us wonderful iced tea and crumpets.
This is a very interesting little town. It reminds us a lot of Cooperstown, with a single theme. Baseball and Mark Twain.
Our evening entertainment was a Mark Twain impersonator who was quite intertaining.
Last day tomorrow! Government shutdown continues.
