Wednesday Davenport and Rock Island

Only here until noon today because our next stop, Hannibal, is 170 miles away (that's a long way!) Today we explore Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois. The weather is perfect again! These two cities are part of what is called the "Quad Cities".

Our excursion this morning takes us to the Hauberg Estate, then the Botanical Gardens.

We started by crossing the river over to Rock Island. The Hauberg Estate is a grand old house and gardens build in the 1800's, by Mr. Weyerhauser himself. The lumbering industry was moving west. Loggers were shipping logs down the river in huge rafts and the railroad was already here. So it was a perfect place for a lumber mill.

The property is now owned by the City of Rock Island and is continuing with renovations. We got an interesting tour from several docents.

Then back across the river to the Quad City Botannical Center. The coolest part of it was the huge G gauge model railroad set up! We were unimpressed by the gardens.

"Quad Cities" didn't speak to me. It seems old and tired. They do have a great minor league ballpark!

After lunch back on the ship we got a great up close and personally view of lock & dam No. 15, and how it works. This one included a rotating railroad bridge!

This is day 8 of the Government Shutdown. Things are getting messy at the airports. We may have trouble getting home?
